When I Am Old I Will Play Bassoon
WHEN I AM OLD I WILL PLAY BASSOON
I taught my
boys to play chess—now I’m no longer a challenge to their game.
I taught my
girls to drive—now I dread the urban traffic.
I taught
students to speak and act—now they have far exceeded my achievements.
I encouraged
churches to minister—now I wonder what I can still do for God.
I freely
admit I cannot do what I did at 25—or 55.
AGING—what makes the process
worthwhile?
I can teach
my grandchildren to play chess—and still beat them (although they destroy me in
video games).
I can
rejoice in the writing, speaking and acting accomplishments of my former
students.
I can express
joy for a multitude of years of God’s mercy.
I can
discover new and creative ways to serve God—even with age accommodations.
WHEN I AM OLD I WILL PLAY BASSOON.

old age.”
