Creative Film

You might not expect to find a professor and students from a religious university on the red carpet at the Burbank, California, International Film Festival. But Ann Sorenson and her students walked that carpet at the 11th Annual Burbank Festival. They were there with a “short” film called “My First Funeral,” and they received semi-finalist status. The film also placed as a semi-finalist in the Canadian International Faith and Family Festival and won Best Comedy Short at the Salty Earth Film Festival.

Ann Sorenson, M.F.A., Professor of Communications at the University of Northwestern, St. Paul, Minnesota, has been teaching film at the University for fifteen years. She oversees the five16filmfestival on campus as well as teaching film production, script writing, and visual narrative. Sorenson is a founding member of Minnesota Women in Film and Television.

“My First Funeral” was written by Sarah Morreim, based on her father’s experience as a small-town pastor officiating his first funeral.  The logline is: “Fresh out of seminary, Pastor Paul has diligently prepared for his first funeral. He soon realizes that no amount of preparation can ready him for this funeral.” The film can be found on You Tube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KXZe-bFQ5A8

In addition to her training and encouragement of students in film, Ann is currently in preproduction of a documentary about hiking the Camino de Santiago. She delights in the prospect of continuing to produce and train others in the production of film for the glory of God.
