CREATIVE MINISTRY TO MISSIONARIES

Every once in a while you hear of an idea which causes you to hit your forehead and say, “why wasn’t this done years ago?”

I experienced that reaction when hearing a presentation from Jeff and Sherry Newman. In cooperation with Baptist Mid-Missions, the Newmans are launching a ministry called “Safe Haven.” Their purpose statement includes “caring deeply for the souls of Baptist Mid-Missions missionaries, promoting spiritual strength and fruitfulness and enabling them to achieve optimal longevity and effectiveness over a lifetime of ministry.”

After many years of teaching at Faith Baptist Bible College and Theological Seminary, Jeff and Sherry are uniquely qualified for this endeavor. They will coach missionary appointees, assist missionaries during their first term of service, care for career missionaries on the field and on furlough, provide advice with the spiritual challenges of transition to retirement and help churches develop a care plan for their missionaries.

Seminars are planned on matters of personal soul care, marriage and family, and other aspects of missionary concern. Vital to the ministry will be the availability of personal discipleship-counseling.

While some churches have sought to visit missionaries on the field and tried to offer these services on occasion, the Newmans will make care for missionaries a priority and full-time endeavor. As a former pastor, you can understand my reaction. What a great idea!
