CREATIVE COMPOSITION

Numerous venues across the country will be experiencing an exciting, new composition this Easter season. “Requiem” by Heather Sorenson is scheduled for presentations by Exultate on the following days.   Friday, April 12, at Normandale Lutheran Church, Edina, Minnesota. Saturday, April 13, at Lake Nokomis Lutheran Church, Minneapolis, Minnesota. Sunday, April 14, at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Minneapolis, Minnesota. Specific information about times can be found at exultate.org. My wife and I went to college with Heather’s folks, and Carmen traveled with the Joybells Trio along with her aunt, Ellyn Sorenson Luther. Heather has published hundreds of compositions including the popular “Psalm 23,” “God of Heaven,” and “Let Me Walk You Home.” She has performed at Carnegie Hall and taught as an adjunct at Baylor University. “Although her career is sometimes on a big stage, Heather’s heart is leading the Church in worship, and she feels that her greatest calling is usi

CREATIVE ARRANGING

Sometimes life brings surprises. I have listened to the Barclay Brass on You Tube, enjoying tremendously such features as the video produced by TIME magazine and the Smithsonian to commemorate the 50 th anniversary of “2001 A Space Odyssey.” https://youtu.be/WJ7Ywiq8bsU The Barclay Brass is an ensemble comprised of some of the top brass musicians from Washington, D.C. They have played for everyone from the Pope to the President. Their members perform with military bands and are in demand as freelancers across the country. For more than a decade they have performed a wide variety of classical music arranged specifically for brass instruments. The surprise life brought to me was when I learned that many of the arrangements for the Barclay Brass were written by the son of my cousin Becky Miller and her husband Carroll. David Miller’s arrangements have been performed and recorded by The US Marine Band “President’s Own,” The US Air Force Ceremonial Brass, The US Army Band “Persh

Churches Helping Churches

Image
One of the goals of the Minnesota Baptist Association is to work together as a fellowship with churches helping churches.   Last August, Pastor David Rogers and ten others from the Cornerstone Baptist Church of Willmar traveled down to St. James, Minnesota, for a home missions project. Efforts are underway to revitalize the church in St. James and some work on their building was needed. The crew of men and women spent the entire day re-painting the outside of the church. Pastor Rogers and his wife stayed overnight and then painted the yellow lines on the outside stairways for safety purposes.   Rev. Paul Hoover, from the Intermountain Baptist Fellowship, has been meeting with those who are active in the congregation in St. Peter. They are working toward re-opening the church with regular services sometime in the near future.   Calvary Baptist Church, under the leadership of Pastor John Scofield, is making plans to serve as the mother church during this period of re-vitalizati
