CREATIVE ARCHITECTURE

 


Some of the most beautiful buildings in all the world are found in Europe. Travelers marvel at the construction and decorations of years gone by. Those who live among the beauty sometimes lose the awe of what they experience daily.

Anna Morrell has been such a traveler in Spain for the past three months. Having earned a degree in architecture from Bob Jones University she was very aware of the beauty around her. But she was not just there to study architecture. Anna served with a missionary couple, the Seth Grotze family.

The creativity aspect came from a combination of artistic and natural curiosity. Anna went to a coffee shop to draw the buildings around her. In America most of us do not think of stopping to look at what someone is drawing, but in Spain this is apparently not uncommon. So people engaged with Anna in the coffee shop and she in turn told them why she was in Spain and encouraged them to consider their relationship with Christ.

Anna found opportunities to serve Christ in the church which Grotzes have established, in the coffee shop, working with children, and walking the Camino. She enjoyed the time so much that she plans to go back in January for a full year. After all, there are a lot of beautiful buildings to sketch and a lot of people to encourage to take the next step toward Christ.

Creative Zooming

This week I had the privilege of being invited into Sam’s Club. It had nothing to do with groceries. Every Monday night Mark Telloyan in Indiana and John Telloyan in Japan zoom with their father Sam Telloyan in Michigan. They call it Sam’s Club. And they include in the meeting someone Sam knew from his many years at Pillsbury Baptist Bible College. This week that person was me. We talked about people we knew, places we have been, and ministries we have enjoyed. We talked about the Lord and the privilege it has been to serve Him these many years. Sam looks great, if somewhat older. But then, aren’t we all? Mark is a judge in Indiana. John works with a church in Japan. And Sam is involved in the church in Michigan where his son-in-law Tim VanLoh serves on the pastoral staff. What a great gift Mark and John are giving to their father each week. And what a great reminder of the fellowship we will share for all eternity at the meeting in the air. We won’t even need Zoom.

CREATIVE MUSIC GROUP

  Imagine the Danish String Quartet’s arrangements of Nordic folk tunes played by a group of musicians in Montana. But wait, you don’t have to use your imagination. There is a group in Montana called Stillwater Strings, which according to violinist Lindsey Selman has been “smitten” with those folk tune arrangements. And that’s only a part of what they enjoy. They revel in the classics such as Debussy’s Claire de Lune . Their repertoire includes Latin music, traditional music, and Jazz standards, such as Cole Porter’s You’d Be So Nice to Come Home To. These beautiful arrangements are played at weddings in Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota and Idaho. They have performed at the Strawberry Festival in Billings, Montana, and at non-profit events for groups such as LaVie, an early pregnancy center, and Family Services.
