BOOKS! BOOKS! BOOKS!

In these days of Kindle and Ebooks, what does a person do with a personal theological library in retirement? I have asked myself that question. James Lutzweiler has proposed a creative solution. He is looking for a benefactor who would like to purchase and donate an entire collection to a seminary, college or Bible institute. He has amassed a collection of 15,000 books and would love to see it kept intact. Another possibility would be a church member who wants to bless the pastor or church library with a special gift. Lutzweiler has spent nearly sixty years putting the collection together. “I would hate to see them scattered to the four winds from which I have selectively gathered them,” he writes. Titles cover theology, biography, history, literature, poetry, China, Russia, Judaism, Zionism, Gospel music, the American Civil War, railroads, art, and some first editions. CREATIVE PUBLIC SERVICE

“What’s the main difference between judges and lawyers?” “Lawyer’s know they’re boring.” That’s the joke my friend Mark Telloyan shared now that he has become a member of the judicial system. He says his official title is Judge, but sometimes paperwork refers to him as “The Honorable” and attorneys often address him as “Your Honor.”   “That takes some getting used to,” says Mark.   Telloyan is one of eight Superior Court judges in St. Joseph County, Indiana. His court handles general jurisdiction for civil matters. The county uses merit selection where a nominating commission interviews applicants and selects names to be forwarded to the Indiana governor. Governor Eric Holcomb made the final selection and informed Mark by telephone. However, he almost didn’t take the call because he thought it was a telemarketer.   Mark initially assumed the bench on Valentine’s Day, 2022. Four days later he suffered a stroke and after treatment for a brain tumor convalesced on me

CREATIVE RETIREMENT MINISTRY

Image
After forty-four years of ministry, Carroll and Becky Miller have entered into a key role with the International Messenger Staff. They travel to Poland three times each year to provide support and spiritual care for missionaries. The conference they are presently attending near Krakow will bring them into contact with missionaries from Romania, Ukraine, England, Hungary, Slovakia, Lebanon, Turkey, Pakistan, and the Czech Republic. Since those from Egypt have been denied passports, they plan to visit them in a separate conference in November. During these encouraging sessions for missionaries, Carroll and Becky have shared seminars on Discipleship and Finances. These retirement trips are simply an extension of what they did in ministry. Since 1997 they have led short term missions trips with over two hundred participants and have had the joy of seeing ten to twenty people make decisions for Christ each year. Utilizing Zoom has made teaching possible even in the chaos of COVID.
