CREATIVE SENIOR MINISTRY

Image
Last week a group of Senior Saints traveled down to the Fagen Fighters WWII Museum near Granite Falls, Minnesota. The trip was only one of the exciting weekly adventures of the Golden Agers from Fourth Baptist Church of Plymouth, Minnesota. Pastor Jared Page has a unique job description at the church. He is the Pastor of Students and Seniors. Within one week it is not unusual for him to teach Children’s church, provide an AWANA lesson, and plan a meeting or trip for the Golden Agers. The Senior group at Fourth was started in 1982 by Norm Monroe. More recently it was under the leadership of Jim McLeish, who Pastor Page replaced when Jim retired. “The most memorable event we have taken was a trip to Branson,” writes Jared. “We had so much fun during that week and some really memorable experiences.” Generally the weekly meetings are held at the church and include a luncheon. Speakers include missionaries, local hobbyists, and Minnesota historians. I have had the privilege of prese

AMAZING ORATORIO

Image
The radio in our car is almost constantly tuned to classical music stations. Carmen and I would have loved to live in the days of Handel and Mozart. This coming October 29 we look forward to experience a similar thrill at the performance of Abraham: An Oratorio for Worship. Deo Cantamus of Minnesota will present Abraham at 4:00 p.m. in the auditorium of Fourth Baptist Church of Plymouth, Minnesota. Contemporary composer Dr. Joshua Bauder has written this sacred concert piece for soloists, chorus, and orchestra. “It dramatizes the biblical story of Abraham, a man called by God to found a new people, through whom the whole world will be blessed.” Composer Lloyd Larson writes, “Director Al Hawkins is a skilled conductor who brings out the very best in these talented singers.” The goal of Abraham is to make the message of God’s faithfulness even more relevant in our chaotic and hard-hearted world. Advance tickets for the concert are now available at www.DeoCantamus.org , and w

CREATIVE ADOPTION

Eleven-year-old Susan Carter was one of hundreds of foster children in the metropolis of Toronto, Canada. God worked a miracle for her and her siblings, keeping them together and giving them Christian parents. She tells the exciting story in her new book Five Tickets to Kansas. As missionaries, she and her husband have told their stories many times. Child Evangelism Fellowship turned it into an illustrated children’s packet with pictures, a memory verse, and coloring pages for each lesson. The Pacific Garden Mission Unshackled Radio Theater featured a two-part story in 2016. Susan says, “I wrote the story to give hope to those suffering from brokenness, showing them there is victory, forgiveness, and reconciliation on many levels through the healing power of Christ.” She used letters from her birth parents and birth grandparents, original birth certificates and newspaper clippings in recounting the amazing journey. One infant boy remained in the line of King David, the lineage through which the promised Messiah must come. Attacks from the north and south killed most of the royal sons. Those who were left fell into the clutches of wicked Queen Athaliah who ordered the murder of her own grandsons in order to claim the throne for herself. Only Joash remained. Raised in Solomon's Temple by the high priest and his wife, Joash became king at seven years of age. His first official duty involved the deposing of his wicked grandmother. Following closely the b
