CREATIVE COMFORT

Image
“The Lord is my shepherd.” How many times have the words of Psalm 23 become the comfort needed when we face those challenges where we learn to trust and “fear no evil”? One of our greatest fears as parents is often concern for our children, even more than for ourselves. Steve and Kay Leeman faced that fear in 2011. They received a phone call from their son-in-law informing them that their daughter Ursula was in the hospital in Denver. She suffered from blood clots in her lungs. Catching an immediate flight they arrived before midnight, finding her surrounded by machines which breathed on her behalf. A night of prayer and recalling God’s promises brought comfort as she began the road to recovery. A year later, Steve took a watercolor class. With thanksgiving in his heart, he completed the nine watercolor paintings included in his “Psalm 23 for Little Lambs.” He did not intend it for general consumption. Instead he made copies for friends and family in order to share with others

CREATIVE SERVICE

Class work has been completed. Final exams for certification loom large. What’s a person to do now? Lyric Allen has chosen creative service as a Big Sister for a week of camp with foster children. Royal Family Kids is a weeklong camp for the purpose of showing kids in foster care how much they are loved. Big Sisters will work together with campers on crafts, games, swimming, and other exciting camp activities. Big Brothers, volunteer Aunts and Uncles, as well as Grandmothers and Grandfathers, will do the same. Finding it necessary to raise $500.00 for her week, Lyric posted the need on Facebook and raised that amount in one day. She finished her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Bryan College of Health Science last week and will take her National Council Licensure Examination in June. So studying is on the agenda, but so is creative service. “Just to be able to show these kids someone cares about them and loves them makes it all worthwhile,” says Lyric. Training is importan

CREATIVE FAMILY GROWTH

And baby makes eight!   You may remember the story from an earlier blog post: our niece Kim and her husband began adoption proceedings and quickly grew to a family of seven. Five siblings came to them from various states where they had been in foster care. Kim and Kevin welcomed them into a loving home, choosing to keep the brothers and sister together as a family unit.   In addition to taking on the sudden responsibility of a large family, Kim found herself needing surgery for a goiter which was severely impacting her oxygen intake. Then they received word that another sibling would be born in April of 2024. Their hearts longed to add the new boy to their expanding family, but health, finances, and the lack of more room in their SUV seemed to say no.   After the surgery, Kim found out she could breathe again, and the outlook began to change.  It was time to make room for eight. When the already-loved baby arrived, Kim went to the hospital while Kevin drove to Florida to pi
